Following its first theatrical adaptation in 2021, the series Given is returning to the stage in May 2025 with a new play titled Given: Umi e.
The popularity of Given, a manga by Natsuki Kizu, continues to grow. After being adapted into animated films, an anime series, and a drama, Given is making its way back to the theater with Given: Umi e.
Originally, Given is a boys' love (BL) manga focused on music and the intricate emotions of its characters. The story revolves around the meeting of Ritsuka Uenoyama, a talented but disillusioned young guitarist, and Mafuyu Sato, an enigmatic singer with a captivating voice who struggles to express his feelings. Their bond through music and the development of their relationship form the emotional core of the narrative, which explores themes of grief, healing, and love.
In this new production, which follows the 2021 play, audiences will see much of the original cast returning. Sayato Arima will reprise his role as Mafuyu Sato, while Ryo Shibuki returns as Ritsuka Uenoyama. Futa Sunaga and Shota Kawakami will portray Haruki Nakayama and Akihiko Kaji, the other members of the band.
Several supporting characters will also make a comeback: Iori Miyauchi will play Kashima Hiiragi, Mafuyu's childhood friend, and Takeru Funaki will portray Yagi Shizusumi, the reserved drummer.
Fumiya Matsuzaki, who directed the first adaptation, will lead this new production, joined by Yuniko Ayana, who wrote the script for the original play. The premiere is scheduled for May 2025.
